Debating

Portumna C.S. has had a long and successful history of Debating. In 2018 the Portumna C.S Debating Society was established by Ms L. Skelly, with the aims to instill a lasting sense of self-confidence in students whilst also teaching pupils English skills of paramount importance in the languages of persuasion and argument, through debating.

The school’s debating teams have taken part in the Concern Debates for many years. This participation in the Concern debates has been punctuated by the multiple times the school has reached the last 16 stage of the competition, most recently so in 2020. The school has also held in-house debating competitions, through CSPE and English classes with the intention to encourage students to become more self-aware of their surrounding climate, and how to articulate their opinions using evidence-based argument.

Portumna Community Schools debating team are registered to compete in the ACCS debating competition under the guidance of Ms L. Skelly, Ms N. Byrne, Ms A. Fahy and Mr N. Plews.
