Thanks to Alison Dervan from the Irish Second-Level Students’ Union (ISSU) the national representative body for second level students for providing support, training and assistance to our Students Council earlier this year.

Students Council

•Our Student Council is a representative structure through which students in our college can become involved in the affairs of the school, working in partnership with school management and staff and parents for the benefit of the school and its students.
•They are consulted on important matters and act as the voice of our student body.

Bake for brain injury

Picture
Our 2nd Year Home Economics students and students council organised a cake sale on March 12th raising much needed funds for Acquired Brain Injury Ireland.  They really enjoyed being involved in this Bake for Brain Injury Fundraiser as it’s a charity very close to our hearts here in Porumna Community School.  In total, €440.20 was raised.

BReast Cancer Ireland

A coffee morning was held in Portumna Community School on December 19th 2019 raising €1700 for Breast Cancer Ireland and Cancer Care West.  The event saw visitors to the school enjoying a bite to eat, a cup of coffee and a natter.

Among them were Juliette O’Connell from Breast Cancer Ireland.  Juliette delivered the Breast Health Education and Awareness programme to members of the community, teachers and senior students. The aim of this programme is to encourage and educate women about good breast health from a young age so that if an abnormality occurs it will be identified early and the treatment outcome will be more positive.
Her presentation was delivered in a friendly, informative and non-intrusive manner to all. Using a medically induced mannequin she showed the eight symptoms of breast cancer and educated our young female students, members of the community and teachers on how to perform a self-breast examination; recognising the symptoms and encouraging them to download Breast Cancer Ireland’s free Breast Aware App.

This event was student led and run.  Thanks to all the staff, students and parents for the lovely home baked cakes on the day and to our many sponsors for the raffle prizes.  A huge thanks to everyone for attending and supporting this community event.

Coinciding with the Breast Cancer Ireland workshops, Brian Hanley Galway Minor Manager, Jeff Lynskey Galway U 20 Manager and Damien Coleman Connacht Director of Hurling gave a very thoughtful presentation on ‘Promoting a Positive Mindset’ for young men. All three presenters spoke of their own experiences from their personal, professional and sporting lives which included both amusing and indeed emotional responses from the enthralled audience. The presentation centered on how a positive mindset can help promote resilience in today’s society while much of the content focussed on working with young adults in a sporting context the strong messages conveyed could be applied to all aspects of a young persons life. Many thanks to Brian, Jeff and Damien for giving of their time visiting PCS. Also on the day, a presentation was made on behalf of the staff to Leaving Certificate student Declan McLoughlin. Declan was a member of the successful Galway Minor Hurling Panel in 2019.
