BASKETBALL
Basketball has experienced a revival in Portumna Community School this year with the formation of junior and senior girls’ and boys’ teams. This is a monumental occasion for the school as they are the first groups to represent P.C.S. in over twenty years in this sport. On Wednesday the 2nd of March, the second-year boys’ basketball team from Portumna Community School visited neighbouring Scariff Community College to play their first basketball since forming at the beginning of the school year. They are the first representatives of school basketball in over twenty years and their debut resulted in a win over their strong Clare opponents, winning by a margin of five points. Following this, on Friday the 4th of March the first and year girls’ basketball teams made their debut as they faced St. Killian’s College, New Inn. The students played with great heart and determination but unfortunately, they were narrowly defeated. The revival of the sport has been strongly supported by Principal Shane McClearn, Deputy Principal Elaine Shanahan – Dunne, team sponsors ‘The Muscle Mill’ and ‘The Cottage Store’ and coaches Ms. E. Byrne, Ms. C. Casey, Ms. S. Keane and Ms. N. Byrne. Well done to the staff and students involved - we wish them the best of luck in future games! Jim Hynes @The Connaght Tribune Rugby

Chamber choir..
If you love to sing as part of a choir, then our Chamber Choir is undoubtedly the ensemble for you. We compete regularly at choral festivals and competitions throughout the country. Our music room plays host to rehearsals every day of the week as there is always an upcoming gig, competition, concert or musical production to prepare for. Our annual opening School Mass, Carol Service, Summertime Concert and Graduation Mass offer students a platform to showcase their musical talents.

Musicals..
Music, song, drama and dance are an integral part of the cultural life of our school. The musical is geared towards Transition years and 1st, 2nd and 5th years are encouraged to participate in the school musical choir. Auditions are held for various dancing, singing and acting. Months of rehearsal culminate in a week-long extravaganza of talent to rival any show on Broadway. Beauty and the Beast was the 2018/2019 show. Our latest show production was ‘The Wiz’ 2019/2020.

Ease on down the road....The Wiz hits the perfect note!
December 2020
Wizard of Oz lovers in Portumna rejoiced, as Portumna Community School presented The Wiz on Thursday and Friday last. With soul, catchy dance numbers, cracking one-liners this musical was suitable for all the family. The Wiz was created to give a voice to the urban African-American and the song styles reflected that with nods to R&B, gospel, and jazz.
Essentially, the story line was the same. Dorothy got caught in a tornado, landed on a witch, and was guided towards Oz by well-meaning Munchkins. Along the way she picked up a trio of friends-Scarecrow, Tinman, and Lion. She got to Oz, met the Wizard, killed the other Wicked Witch (Robyn Williams), and went home. The main difference was the music, the vibe, and the snappy dialogue. The Wizard (Kyle-McCole Madden) went to Motown and brought back his best and brightest to breathe new life into Oz.
Indeed, the cast was something to celebrate. Fiona Lohan was the sweetly naive Dorothy who perfectly tied up the show in the closing number, "Home." Her friends were even more impressive. Michael Kelly’s Lion sounding exactly as you would wish him to. Grace Madden as Tinman in her musical theatre debut. Her aptitude for physical comedy matching her singing, and "Slide Some Oil to Me" was one of the most entertaining numbers of the evening. Not surprisingly, the humble Scarecrow (Stephen Donelan) was the one who stole our hearts. His rousing "You can't win" kicked off the energy of the show and was immediately followed by the song we all know and love, "Ease on Down the Road."
This talent was backed up by an ensemble that exuded the 70s aura in numbers that showcased gorgeous glittering costumes. The musical direction by Emma Brogan needs to be mentioned. It was diverse and thrilling. This show was a visual feast of colour, shine, and movement. The audience were dancing in their seats, howling with laughter, and singing the songs long after the night had ended.
Stagewise Musical Adjudicator Kori Kilduff "WOW! –“ABSOLUTELY SUPERB… STUNNING PRODUCTION… It’s hard to imagine The Wiz being given a more stunning production than Sean Power has directed so masterfully, or a more brilliant cast than the one assembled on the Portumna Community School stage, a huge congratulations to all involved from the amazing stage design to the creative make up and beautiful costumes this show was top class from start to finish..."

Debating
Portumna C.S. has had a long and successful history of Debating. In 2018 the Portumna C.S Debating Society was established by Ms L. Skelly, with the aims to instil a lasting sense of self-confidence in students whilst also teaching pupils English skills of paramount importance in the languages of persuasion and argument, through debating.
The school’s debating teams have taken part in the Concern Debates for many years. This participation in the Concern debates has been punctuated by the multiple times the school has reached the last 16 stage of the competition, most recently so in 2020. The school has also held in-house debating competitions, through CSPE and English classes with the intention to encourage students to become more self-aware of their surrounding climate, and how to articulate their opinions using evidence-based argument.
