Changing to a new subject
All subject changes and level changes to be completed by October 10th. One of the merits of this is that students do not lose further tuition time with a subject that he/she is about to take on. In general, it Is educationally unsound for a student to change a subject four to six weeks into the school year and one of the main reasons is that the student will have lost a significant amount of tuition time with the subject the he/she is about to embark on.
It's essential that students and parents get the selection and subject choice correct for fifth year and second year; as this will certainly prevent students from loss of tuition time with a subject that has been chosen later in the academic year.
Changing of levels
It is expected that students may have to change levels from time to time particularly from a higher level subject to an ordinary level subject and this is a standard operating procedure. However, it is not advisable for a student to suddenly change from ordinary level to higher level as this creates pressure for the student and the change will also have a deleterious effect on the student's progress in the other subjects because of all the ground work to catch up on the newly selected level.
If a subject change is imminent; the change should be made as early as possible in the school term. The student should consult with the class teacher and the Guidance teacher, as this will speed up the process and subsequently prevent loss of tuition time and delay the postponement of the subject change by the student.
Year 1
After October 10th of the academic year it is not advisable for students to make a subject change because of loss of tuition time. It might be more appropriate if the student waited until second year to make the change because this is when courses begin for the Junior Cert.
Operating Procedure
1.The student informs the class teacher that he/she wants to change a subject or a level.
2. The student brings a letter to the Deputy Principal requesting the change; the letter must be signed by parents or Guardian.
3. An application is made for the subject/level change.
4. Deputy Principal checks with the office if a place is available in the new subject class and the proposed change fits into the Band structure.
5.. If a change is practical and a place is available in the new subject class, the change will then be made.
Selection of subjects at the end of Year 1, Year 3 and Transition Year.
As well as studying the core subjects, students are asked to select four subjects from the Option Bands which are designed to meet the needs of the student body. It is imperative that each student provides their subject choice at the end of year 1, year 3 and Transition year so that all student needs in terms of subject choice are in the mix before Option Bands are selected.
